Cowles Research Group

We are an independent research company that customizes information extracted from government health databases. Cowles Research Group (CRG) has a sixteen year track record of successfully creating databases and reports that provide clients with critical information for litigation support, strategic planning, quality improvement, marketing, and health services research.

CRG is retained by corporations, consultants, law firms, academic researchers, and government entities, with a broad range of health care interests, and special emphasis in the area of long term care. We analyze each client's specific needs to assure the data we provide will most appropriately serve their purpose. We pride ourselves on our many repeat customers who value our hands-on approach.

Charles McKeen (Mick) Cowles, the owner of CRG, worked for the federal government for thirteen years, the last four for the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). He also directed research and data programs at the American Health Care Association, and edits the annual Nursing Home Statistical Yearbook, with the 13th edition being published in 2008. His personal contacts and relationships within government agencies can assist clients with obtaining government data and reports. When timing is critical, our access to key players can make the difference between success or failure.

  • Litigation support, in the form of programming and data analysis, in civil and criminal actions.
  • Due diligence research for acquisitions and mergers.
  • A multi-year contract with HCFA to clean and organize archived OSCAR survey databases, creating unduplicated calendar year analytic files for use by policy-makers.
  • A market study of long term care facilities for a large national vendor, containing detailed facility-specific information.
  • Accessing difficult-to-obtain databases, including non-public use files of CMS such as the nursing home complaint survey data, enforcement (civil and monetary penalties) data, and SNF cost report master file.
